Resumes 101

Writing a resume, on the surface, seems like an easy task. However, there is a lot more that goes into it than meets the eye. Below is a basic outline of considerations before you launch into your resume and job search.

  1. What do I want? (What are my goals) - If you are looking for a job, think long and hard about the following things:
a) Is this really my chosen career field?
b) Am I really happy doing this?
c) Is this what I was really "meant to do"?

Whatever your job or occupation, you are going to be spending a high percentage of your time on earth doing it. You better love it! The happiest people are those that figure out how to make a living from what they love to do!

It is never too late to decide what you want to be when you grow up...

  1. Commit to your chosen career or passion - Once you have truly decided what it is you want and need to do; go after it with gusto and urgency!

It may be that you have determined that you what to be a forest ranger, a typing teacher or maybe even start your own part-time Internet business from home. Once you make that decision - commit to it! Nothing happens in this life without commitment.

  1. A resume is not what you think it is! - Most folks think of a resume as simply a documentation of their employment history. Wrong. A resume is a "new product market launch"!

That's right; you are launching a new product into the market. The product of course is you, and you need to sell yourself to your target demographic!

Your resume is the product marketing piece that we will use to generate interest. We will shop this marketing piece around to our target market. Who is that? ...It is those who have a need for what your product has to offer - potential employers.

This all means that the most important role of your resume is to get a job interview by showing how your skills and abilities fill the need of the employer. Demonstrate what you can do for him - not what you are looking for.
